What
is acupuncture? Acupuncture is the use of inserting needles in empirical points positioned around the body, to assist the body’s own natural healing powers. It is a medical tradition practiced for thousands of years in the orient. Its success is proven by the fact that it survived over this time and today, continues to be an effective treatment for a large number of modern health problems.
The
practitioner looks at the medical condition or symptoms, not in
isolation, but rather holistically along with all the strengths and
weaknesses of each particular patient. Every patient is unique, with an
intrinsic pattern of disharmony, which includes the Mind, Body and
Spirit. The practitioner treats each patient with a combination of
acupuncture points.
The
emphasis of Chinese medicine is on prevention, although today, most of
the patients seen in the acupuncturist's clinic have come as a last
resort. They knock yet another door to find an answer to their
suffering. They present with a symptom or number of symptoms. They may
even have the medical term for their illness, i.e. Arthritis,
Dysmenorrhoea, asthma, psoriasis, or any of the other numerous
illnesses. Practitioners of Chinese medicine have little use for this
label; they take each sign and symptom and look at it, in relation to
the whole body.
Over
2,000 years of observation, the Chinese identified energy they called
Qi. It is the vital energy that circulates throughout the universe. It
fills the air we breathe, and the food we eat. It is the life that
starts our first heart beat. It is responsible for our first breath
after leaving our mother's womb. In order to maintain homeostasis or
balance the body's Qi must run smoothly. Qi flows along this network of
14 channels that spread throughout the body, that are associated with an
organ system. Disharmony can arise when it becomes blocked or its flow
or quantity is altered.
Acupuncture
aims to restore the smooth flow of Qi along the channels by stimulating
acupuncture points, using ultra fine needles. It has been shown by
scientific research, that stimulating these points triggers the body's
production of endorphins, naturally occurring substances that ease pain
and induce euphoric feelings. There
are a number of modern scientific theories as to how acupuncture works.
The
acupuncturist utilizes a system of diagnoses that is vastly different
from western medicine is used, and is based on the idea of disharmony
within the body. It can be superficial along the channels or it can be
deeper, affecting the Inner Organs, or both.
Over
2 thousand years, the Chinese learned that by inserting needles into
certain points on the surface of the body, they could influence how our
bodies fight these disharmonies. Chinese medicine facilitates our
ability to heal ourselves, of many of the illnesses that plaque humans
and animals alike.
